Buxnis started with a single bifold and a workbench. Everything we sell is still cut, stitched and burnished by hand in our own workshop in the United States.
We work in full-grain and vegetable-tanned hide, shell cordovan, suede and pebbled calfskin, so you are not forced into whatever one tannery happened to ship us. If you want something we do not list, we will build it to your spec.

The top layer of the hide with nothing sanded away, so the grain, the pores and the odd healed scar are all still there. It is the strongest part of the skin and the only grade that develops a real patina. Our default for wallets, belts and bags.
Tanned with bark and plant tannins rather than chromium salts. It starts pale and stiff, then darkens to a deep honey over a few months of handling. If you want a piece that visibly records how you use it, choose this.
Cut from the fibrous shell beneath a horse hide. Dense, glassy and almost creaseless, it rolls rather than folds. Expensive and slow to produce, which is why we keep it for straps and small goods.
Suede is the split underside, buffed to a nap. Pebbled calfskin is embossed for texture and hides scuffs well. Both are softer options for people who prefer a bag that slouches from day one.
